Webster Racing rebuilds Unlimited Class Hydroplane using MAS epoxy

Mike Webster of Webster Racing located in Reading PA has been racing boats his entire life. He won his first major event, J Stock Outboards Eastern Division Title, at age ten. Since then he’s won many championships including 3 time National Champion and 2 time World Champion.

Mike always dreamed of racing the UNLIMITED class. In early 2007 he and his team traveled to Evansville, Indiana and purchased an UNLIMITED hull from Ed Cooper. This hull raced for Master Tire from 1998 through 2002 powered by twin Allison piston engines. Mike planned to replace the piston engines with a Lycoming T55 C7 turbine power plant.
These engines were used in Chinook helicopters, develop 3,000 HP and should push the 7,000 pound boat to speeds of 200 MPH.

Mike partnered with MAS Epoxies who sponsored the boat and helped with the rebuild project which began in late 2007. The major rebuild including new framing and bulkheads, reinforcements, new shaft placement and other modifications required for the new power plant. The boat needed new cowling and a new driver capsule in addition to some cosmetic repairs. By December of 2008 the major repairs were finished, the primer coat was on and the equipment installation began.

Now in June of 2009 the boat parts have been painted with only final assembly and testing left to go. The boat is scheduled to race the Indiana Governor’s Cup race in Madison Indiana July 4 – 6.

Mike told us that he previously used [popular competitive brand] epoxy for his boatbuilding and drag racing applications. Now he uses MAS Epoxy and will never go back. He finds the 2 to 1 mixing ratio of MAS product incredibly easy with less chance for error than with his old system. He also commented on the superior wet out ability of the product and how the slow hardener gives him lots of working time without the “boiling and smoking” and sudden gelling he experienced before. He also likes the fact that the product does not blush saving time and money. He told us that it’s clear, non-blushing formula makes transparent applications, i.e. where he wants the carbon fiber to show through, look beautiful. “I would not use any other epoxy system” Mike told us.
